How can we prevent misery from taking over our lives?

A hostage situation happened yesterday at the busy and famous Sydney cafe in the downtown area. The perpetrator was an individual who claimed to be Islamist and even hung an Islamic flag outside one of the windows of the cafe. Unfortunately, 3 died, including the perpetrator, after a 24 hour standoff earlier this morning. This was in reaction to the way in which the government of Australia seemed to have handled recent threats like these by people from the Islamic world. It is a very sensitive situation that put this particular individual over the edge and into this type of situation. In order to prevent this, we need to do our part to understand how people will act in this world. Everybody is different and there is no way that we can please all the people of the world, but we do need to be mindful of all the people around us. People do not tell others what they are really going through unless they are in a situation that makes them feel comfortable to speak. True freedom will allow us to understand ourselves and the world around us. We need to make our lives better before we make other people’s lives better. The solution to our misery starts with us. We cannot look to another. We should not feel the need to get rid of the misery of others, rather, we should seek to understand our own.
