A Prophet to Guide

There is a lot of confusion when it comes to the role that the prophets play in this day and age. There are a lot of people who claim to be prophets, but they all have different roles to play in their respective groups. That is a part of the problem, but it has always been. There is not one definition that can define all of them as such. In fact, there is an entire school of them and they all seem to play different roles. Their roles even differ from many of the prophets of old. When you think about a prophet, each person that you talk to will have a different answer to that question. There are a couple of hallmarks that a lot of the prophets in this day and age share.

  • They are leaders and they have the ability to influence the lives of a lot of people, especially those that they follow directly. It is something that also defined prophets in the past. Even though they were not always the same as high priests, they were influential in the ways in which the high priests functioned and taught the people.
  • They predicted the future. A lot of the problems with many of the people that claimed to be prophets in this day and age were too specific with their predictions. None of the prophets of old and those of today had made specific date references. They just knew enough about history and the cycles to make predictions as to what will happen. The prophets of today need to be more akin to meteorologists in the ways in which they convey messages to the people.
  • They contribute to the wider canon. They may or may not produce religious texts, but they will bring it to clarification as well. The canon is not closed. It is so widely opened that there continues to be new literature produced every day. No matter what religious tradition or philosophy is used, there is always something new to be produced.

There are a lot of other hallmarks, but these are the three that stand out to most of the people and the ones that the leaders share the most in common. Even though it is not something that is widely talked about in our time, it is something that still occurs and will continue to occur.
