The Valley Authority

1. The Valley Authority (1870-1873)

Status: Manuscript Complete

Synopsis:

The valley is in turmoil over who will have control of the railroads, the riches, and the people. Two sets of families are vying for power and represent two different types of people. On one end are the Shaffer’s and the Bradford’s, the rich, the powerful, and the connections to the army and the railroad. On the other end are the Smith’s and the Russell’s and their associates, the people, the guerillas, and, in the eyes of the outside world, the terrorists. Each of these sides have armies in the form of private militias and supporters, money, and the drive to grab hold of the power and the potential. The Stone brothers, a pair of investigators and journalists, are reporting to the rest of the world this conflict that is quickly escalating.

A young man named Ryan has already come out of the mountains with a mountain of knowledge and riches. As he is pursued by both groups for his involvement in building the community, he befriends both groups of people and wants to decide for himself what is right. He meets up with each group and learns about how deep the war has gotten. He is persuaded to join with William through incidents that happen to him and to William that lead to his decision. Ryan befriends many people in the group, including the Stone brothers, their assistant, Katie, a young journalist, Allie, that Ryan later falls in love with, and recruits the help of his mining assistant, Kelly, and William and Logan’s friend on the inside, Kyle. Ryan knows that he must strengthen him for the impending doom that will one day befall his family. Ryan, William, and Logan join forces to investigate the plans of the other side and finds out disturbing things about the plans of Dalton and Cody as time progresses. When their plan begins to take shape, Logan is kidnapped by Dalton and Cody because of his connections to Ryan and William and his status as the “brains” of the group and the mountain of lies that they created to get people to take their side became known by Kyle and the rest of the group.

Cody and Dalton set up in the south of the valley and they plan to enter into the heart of the valley with the help of Kyle and a militia who take over the valley and burn the entire city of Carroll down. Ryan and William end up being held up against the citizens of the valley at the Shaffer manor, which is located in the north of the valley, while Dalton and Cody rig the area under the house with explosives to kill the entire Shaffer family. Ryan and William manage to break out of the Shaffer manor with Ryan pulling off a few tricks of their own and escape the now empty house as it blows up. They go on to rescue Logan while fighting off Dalton and Cody with the help of Kyle and the newspaper staff. At the end of the battle, Ryan, William, and Logan prevail and Dalton and Cody run off. The Shaffer household and their allies manage to bring order to the valley. At the end of the novel, Edward establishes The Valley Authority and appoints William as officer 1 and Ryan as officer 2. At the end, Allie, who built a strong relationship with Ryan, leaves for the plains and Dalton and Cody return in the night to kill Edward in retaliation, both fulfilling at least part of their goals while setting up a plot for a potential sequel. At this point, however, William seems level headed enough to carry on the family fortune with the help of Ryan and the stories that they share with one another throughout the course of the plot.
