As we approach the mid-2020s, the global landscape is fractured and volatile, marked by an array of political, economic, and technological upheavals. From coups in South Korea and pro-European protests in Georgian streets to the collapse of Syria under Bashar al-Assad, these dramatic events are just the visible tip of a sprawling geopolitical iceberg. Beneath the surface, deeper shifts are challenging the structures of the global order.

Among the more pressing crises are the war in Ukraine, the escalating US-China rivalry, and a surge in class struggle exacerbated by widening economic and social inequalities. Intersecting these challenges is a new chapter in US leadership under President Donald Trump, whose rise to power in 2024 mirrors and magnifies the chaos of our times.

Let’s explore how Trump’s leadership embodies this era of unpredictability, the implications of his administration, and the broader systemic forces driving the chaos that defines the current world order.

The Global Iceberg of Disorder

Geopolitical Tensions

The global order has been destabilized by regional conflicts and great power confrontations. Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine have reignited Cold War-era tensions, while China’s growing assertiveness in Asia is testing US dominance. Autocratic regimes in the Middle East and Africa have thrived amidst this disorder, using unpredictability as a weapon to outmaneuver slower, more predictable democracies.

Technological Revolution

Simultaneously, breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI), cryptocurrency, and space exploration promise profound transformations. While these advances offer new opportunities, they also exacerbate inequalities and challenge traditional governance structures.

Economic Inequality and Class Struggles

Widening wealth disparities, both within and between nations, are fueling social unrest. The richest 0.1% in the US now control wealth exceeding that of the poorest 50%, a disparity mirrored globally. As a result, grassroots movements are challenging the status quo, demanding fairer distribution of resources and opportunities.

Trump as a Catalyst for Chaos

Donald Trump’s unexpected return to the presidency in 2024 epitomizes the era’s unpredictability. His administration’s early moves—ranging from unconventional cabinet appointments to controversial domestic and foreign policy initiatives—signal a departure from traditional governance.

Unpredictable Leadership Style

Trump’s leadership, characterized by sudden decisions and contradictory actions, confounds allies and adversaries alike. Drawing from game theory, some analysts argue that his unpredictability may be a deliberate strategy. By keeping opponents off balance, Trump disrupts their ability to anticipate and counter his moves.

Key Appointments

Trump’s cabinet includes a mix of rational technocrats, polarizing ideologues, and Silicon Valley elites. Notable figures include:

  • Michael Waltz, National Security Adviser: A pragmatic military strategist.
  • Tulsi Gabbard, National Security Director: A controversial choice with a history of contrarian views.
  • Elon Musk, Head of the Department of Government Effectiveness: Tasked with streamlining bureaucracy and cutting costs.

These appointments reflect Trump’s preference for outsiders and disruptors, further amplifying the administration’s chaotic energy.

Opportunities and Risks of Trump’s Agenda

Opportunities

  1. Technological Advancement: With close ties to Silicon Valley, Trump’s administration may accelerate innovation in AI, space exploration, and green energy.
  2. Economic Reshoring: His protectionist policies aim to revitalize domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on foreign supply chains.
  3. Geopolitical Realignment: By challenging established alliances, Trump could force a reevaluation of global power structures, potentially leading to a more balanced order.

Risks

  1. Institutional Erosion: Trump’s disregard for norms risks undermining the checks and balances essential to a functioning democracy.
  2. Widening Inequality: His pro-business stance may exacerbate wealth disparities, fueling social unrest.
  3. Global Instability: Unilateral actions and unpredictable policies could alienate allies and embolden adversaries, increasing the likelihood of conflict.

The Rise of Autocracy in a Fractured World

Trump’s ascent reflects broader global trends. Democracies are increasingly outmaneuvered by autocracies, which thrive on unpredictability and centralized decision-making. China, for instance, has leveraged its state-controlled economy to dominate critical industries while supporting rogue regimes to destabilize rivals.

The Autocratic Advantage

Autocrats, unburdened by democratic processes, can act swiftly and decisively. This agility has allowed them to exploit opportunities and outpace democracies in geopolitical contests.

The Democratic Response

For democracies to compete, they must embrace flexibility without sacrificing their core principles. This requires strengthening institutions, reducing polarization, and fostering innovation.

Technological Titans: The Double-Edged Sword

Trump’s reliance on Silicon Valley powerhouses marks a new era of tech-driven governance. Figures like Musk and Peter Thiel are poised to shape policy in AI, cryptocurrency, and space exploration.

The Promise

  • AI Revolution: Tailored regulations could unleash unprecedented innovation, enhancing productivity and transforming industries.
  • Space Exploration: Investments in SpaceX and other ventures may accelerate humanity’s journey to Mars and beyond.
  • Green Energy: Advances in technology could mitigate climate change and drive economic growth.

The Peril

  • Conflict of Interest: When tech giants influence policy, the risk of self-serving decisions increases.
  • Exacerbated Inequalities: Wealth concentration in the hands of tech elites may deepen societal divisions.
  • Erosion of Privacy: The integration of AI and surveillance technologies raises ethical concerns.

The Looming Threat of Class Warfare

As economic inequalities deepen, societal tensions are reaching a boiling point. The wealthiest 0.1% control a disproportionate share of resources, while the bottom half struggle to meet basic needs. This imbalance fuels populism and radicalism, threatening the stability of both democratic and autocratic regimes.

The Need for a New Social Contract

To address these challenges, policymakers must pursue reforms that:

  • Redistribute wealth more equitably through progressive taxation and social programs.
  • Promote inclusive economic growth by investing in education and infrastructure.
  • Strengthen democratic institutions to resist authoritarian tendencies.

Conclusion: Navigating a Chaotic World

The 2020s are defined by uncertainty, with old paradigms giving way to new realities. Donald Trump’s presidency is both a symptom and a driver of this transformation. While his leadership may offer opportunities for innovation and reform, it also poses significant risks to global stability and democratic values.

As we navigate this turbulent era, the challenge lies in balancing adaptability with accountability, ensuring that the benefits of change are shared broadly rather than concentrated among the elite. The world’s future depends on whether democracies can rise to this challenge—or succumb to the chaos.

Ryan Hite is an American author, content creator, podcaster, and media personality. He was born on February 3, 1993, in Colorado and spent his childhood in Conifer, Colorado. He moved to Littleton in 2000 and spent the remainder of his schooling years in the city. Upon graduation from Chatfield Senior High School in 2011, he attended the University of Colorado at Boulder. He graduated from the university in 2015 after studying Urban Planning, Business Administration, and Religious Studies. He spent more time in Colorado in the insurance, real estate, and healthcare industries. In 2019, he moved to Las Vegas, NV, where he continued to work in healthcare, insurance, and took his foray into media full time in 2021. His first exposure to the media industry came as a result of the experiences he had in his mid to late teens and early twenties. In 2013, he was compelled to collect a set of stories from his personal experiences and various other writings that he has had. His first book, a 365,000-word epic, Through Minds Eyes, was published in collaboration with Balboa Press. That initial book launched a media explosion. He learned all that he could about creating websites, marketing his published works, and would even contemplate the publication of other works as well. This book also inspired him to create his philosophy, his life work, that still influences the values that he holds in his life. Upon graduating college, he had many books published, blogs and other informative websites uploaded, and would embark on his continued exploration of the world of marketing, sales, and becoming an influencer. Of course, that did not come without challenges that would come his way. His trial-and-error approach of marketing himself and making himself known guided him through his years as a real estate agent, an insurance agent, and would eventually create a marketing plan from scratch with a healthcare startup. The pandemic did not initially create too many challenges to the status quo. Working from home did not affect the quality of his life. However, a series of circumstances such as continued website problems, social media shutdowns, and unemployment, caused him to pause everything between late 2020 and mid-2021. It was another period of loss of momentum and purpose for his life as he tried to navigate the world, as many people may have felt at that time. He attempted to find purpose in insurance again, resulting in failure. There was one thing that sparked his curiosity and would propel him to rediscover the thing that was gone from his life for so long. In 2021, he started his journey by taking on a full-time job in the digital media industry, an industry that he is still a part of today. It was at this point that he would also shut down the rest of the media that he had going at the time. In 2023, he announced that he would be embarking on what has become known as PROJECT30. This initiative will result in the reformation of websites, the reinvigoration of social media accounts, the creation of a Youtube channel and associated podcast, the creation of music, and the continued rediscovery of his creative potential. Unlike past projects, the purpose of this would not expound on the musings of a philosophy, the dissemination of useless news and articles, or the numerous attempts to be someone that he was not. This project is going to be about his authentic self. There are many ways to follow him as he embarks on this journey. Most of all, he wants everyone to be entertained, informed, and, in some ways, maybe a little inspired about the flourishing of the creativity that lies within the mind and soul of Ryan.
