In the age of digital warfare, Russian propaganda has found fertile ground in Africa, exploiting local grievances to erode Western influence while cementing Moscow’s position as a geopolitical power player. What started as an effort to sway Western democracies has now evolved into a sophisticated disinformation campaign aimed at reshaping Africa’s political landscape, undermining democracy, and expanding Russia’s economic and military footprint across the continent.

Through carefully crafted social media campaigns, state-controlled news networks, and strategic partnerships, Russia has successfully gained favor in African nations while pushing the West out of key regions. This influence is evident in the United Nations, where African countries have increasingly refused to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and on the ground, where military regimes, resource deals, and public sentiment now lean heavily toward Moscow.

This blog will explore how Russia has weaponized propaganda, economic partnerships, and military alliances to turn Africa into a key battleground in its new Cold War against the West—and what the U.S. and its allies must do to counter it.

Africa: The New Battleground for Russia’s Information War

For decades, Africa has been viewed as a secondary concern in global politics. Despite being the second-largest continent with over 1.4 billion people, international media and policymakers have often overlooked its significance—something Russia has taken full advantage of.

Russia’s influence campaign in Africa serves multiple strategic objectives:

  • Legitimizing its war in Ukraine by securing African votes at the UN.
  • Breaking Western sanctions by expanding trade and economic alliances.
  • Controlling Africa’s resources—from uranium in Niger to gold in Burkina Faso.
  • Weakening Western military presence, ensuring Moscow-friendly regimes hold power.

At the heart of Russia’s strategy is a massive disinformation campaign, spreading through platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and state-backed news outlets that tailor messages to local grievances. From blaming the West for economic struggles in Kenya to fueling anti-French sentiment in West Africa, Russia has mastered the art of regionalized propaganda.

But who is orchestrating this campaign, and how has it gained such momentous success?

The African Initiative: Russia’s Propaganda Machine

A key player in Moscow’s information war in Africa is the African Initiative, a Russian-backed news agency that presents itself as a platform for “building bridges” between Russia and Africa. Despite its neutral-sounding name, the initiative serves as a direct mouthpiece for the Kremlin, pushing narratives that position Russia as Africa’s ally against Western imperialism.

How the African Initiative Works

  1. Local Language Dissemination – The agency operates in English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, and African languages, ensuring maximum reach across the continent.
  2. Telegram & WhatsApp Networks – Messages are spread through encrypted messaging apps, making them harder to track or counteract.
  3. Recruitment of African Students – Russian officials target African students studying in Moscow, training them to become pro-Russian journalists upon returning home.
  4. Strategic Disinformation Campaigns – Tailored narratives exploit local issues, whether it’s anti-colonial sentiment in Niger and Burkina Faso or economic struggles in Kenya and Egypt.

At the center of this operation is Artam Sergovic Kur, a veteran of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), the successor to the KGB. Kur previously orchestrated influence campaigns in Europe before shifting his focus to Africa after the death of Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in 2023.

With Kremlin funding and intelligence backing, Kur’s African Initiative has outmaneuvered Western media, embedding itself deep within African digital spaces while presenting Russia as a trustworthy partner.

Russia’s Strategy in Africa: A Country-by-Country Breakdown

1. Burkina Faso: Russia’s Africa Lab

Burkina Faso has become Russia’s testing ground for influence operations, where Moscow-backed narratives have actively fueled regime change.

  • 2022: The First Coup – When Paul-Henri Damiba took power, Russian Telegram channels flooded the country with pro-Russia content, urging the new government to replace France with Moscow as its security partner.
  • 2023: The Second CoupIbrahim Traoré overthrew Damiba, with Russian flags seen in the streets as crowds celebrated Russia’s support.
  • Result: A Full Pivot to Moscow – France was expelled, Russian mercenaries arrived, and Russian oligarch Aleksey Mordashov secured gold mining contracts.

Burkina Faso is now a pro-Russian stronghold, proving that Moscow doesn’t just capitalize on instability—it creates it.

2. Niger: From U.S. Ally to Russian Client State

Until 2023, Niger was a cornerstone of Western military strategy in the Sahel, hosting U.S. drone bases and supporting counterterrorism efforts. But Russia saw an opportunity—and took it.

  • Targeted Disinformation Campaign – Russian operatives sowed distrust in Niger’s partnership with the U.S. and France, branding them neo-colonial occupiers.
  • Military Coup in 2023 – President Mohamed Bazoum was deposed, with Russian flags appearing in pro-coup protests.
  • Expulsion of Western Forces – France was forced out, and in 2024, Niger revoked the U.S. military’s access, effectively handing the country over to Russia.

Niger controls 20% of the EU’s uranium supply—and Russia now dominates the sector, tightening its grip on European energy dependence.

3. Kenya: Economic Manipulation Over Military Tactics

Unlike West African nations, Kenya has no history of coups or French colonial rule—so Russia took a different approach.

  • Blaming the West for Inflation – Russian diplomats appeared in Kenyan media, falsely claiming that U.S. sanctions—not Russia’s invasion of Ukraine—were responsible for rising food and fuel prices.
  • Social Media Warfare – Pro-Russian hashtags like #IStandWithPutin trended on Kenyan Twitter, making it seem like Russia had local support.
  • Co-opting Mainstream Media – Russian-backed stories infiltrated Kenya’s most trusted news sources, amplifying Moscow’s narratives.

Kenya remains aligned with the West, but Russia’s propaganda campaign is making inroads, slowly chipping away at public opinion.

4. Egypt: Moscow’s Middle East Anchor

Egypt’s military and economic dependence on the U.S. should make it immune to Russian influence—but once again, Moscow has found a way in.

  • Weaponizing the Grain Crisis – Russia blamed Western sanctions for food shortages, despite Moscow’s own blockade of Ukrainian wheat exports.
  • Dominating Arabic-Language Media – RT Arabic, a Russian state-owned news outlet, became Egypt’s second most-visited news site.
  • Military Cooperation Expansion – Egypt has increasingly purchased Russian arms, replacing American suppliers.

By embedding itself in Egypt’s economy, media, and military, Russia has positioned Cairo as its key Middle Eastern ally.

What’s at Stake for the West?

Russia’s Africa strategy is a direct threat to Western interests:
Military bases lost – The U.S. has already been expelled from Niger, weakening its presence in the Sahel.
Economic leverage diminished – Russia is securing critical mineral resources that Europe and the U.S. rely on.
UN voting power shifting – African nations are increasingly siding with Moscow, eroding U.S. influence in global diplomacy.

The West must act now—or risk permanently losing Africa to Russia’s disinformation machine.

Conclusion: Can the West Counter Russia’s African Gambit?

Russia isn’t just winning a propaganda war in Africa—it’s reshaping the continent’s geopolitical alliances. By exploiting historical grievances, economic hardships, and military instability, Moscow is successfully replacing Western influence with its own.

If the U.S. and its allies fail to match Russia’s strategic aggression, they won’t just lose Africa’s resources and votes—they will lose Africa itself.

Ryan Hite is an American author, content creator, podcaster, and media personality. He was born on February 3, 1993, in Colorado and spent his childhood in Conifer, Colorado. He moved to Littleton in 2000 and spent the remainder of his schooling years in the city. Upon graduation from Chatfield Senior High School in 2011, he attended the University of Colorado at Boulder. He graduated from the university in 2015 after studying Urban Planning, Business Administration, and Religious Studies. He spent more time in Colorado in the insurance, real estate, and healthcare industries. In 2019, he moved to Las Vegas, NV, where he continued to work in healthcare, insurance, and took his foray into media full time in 2021. His first exposure to the media industry came as a result of the experiences he had in his mid to late teens and early twenties. In 2013, he was compelled to collect a set of stories from his personal experiences and various other writings that he has had. His first book, a 365,000-word epic, Through Minds Eyes, was published in collaboration with Balboa Press. That initial book launched a media explosion. He learned all that he could about creating websites, marketing his published works, and would even contemplate the publication of other works as well. This book also inspired him to create his philosophy, his life work, that still influences the values that he holds in his life. Upon graduating college, he had many books published, blogs and other informative websites uploaded, and would embark on his continued exploration of the world of marketing, sales, and becoming an influencer. Of course, that did not come without challenges that would come his way. His trial-and-error approach of marketing himself and making himself known guided him through his years as a real estate agent, an insurance agent, and would eventually create a marketing plan from scratch with a healthcare startup. The pandemic did not initially create too many challenges to the status quo. Working from home did not affect the quality of his life. However, a series of circumstances such as continued website problems, social media shutdowns, and unemployment, caused him to pause everything between late 2020 and mid-2021. It was another period of loss of momentum and purpose for his life as he tried to navigate the world, as many people may have felt at that time. He attempted to find purpose in insurance again, resulting in failure. There was one thing that sparked his curiosity and would propel him to rediscover the thing that was gone from his life for so long. In 2021, he started his journey by taking on a full-time job in the digital media industry, an industry that he is still a part of today. It was at this point that he would also shut down the rest of the media that he had going at the time. In 2023, he announced that he would be embarking on what has become known as PROJECT30. This initiative will result in the reformation of websites, the reinvigoration of social media accounts, the creation of a Youtube channel and associated podcast, the creation of music, and the continued rediscovery of his creative potential. Unlike past projects, the purpose of this would not expound on the musings of a philosophy, the dissemination of useless news and articles, or the numerous attempts to be someone that he was not. This project is going to be about his authentic self. There are many ways to follow him as he embarks on this journey. Most of all, he wants everyone to be entertained, informed, and, in some ways, maybe a little inspired about the flourishing of the creativity that lies within the mind and soul of Ryan.
